Shells are beautiful containers for planting. If you are going to drill holes to hang them, be sure to wear a mask. Do try to be eco-friendly when you buy shells. Many websites, especially ones who distribute to smaller businesses, collect shells by dredging sea floors and killing the shells’ occupants. Look for sites that speak to how they get their shells. For example www.sealifegifts.net, states the following:

“ENVIRONMENTAL NOTE:
WE RECEIVE OUR MARINE SPECIMENS FROM SEAFOOD PROCESSING PLANTS, COMMERCIAL FISHING TRAWLERS BI-CATCH, AND PRIVATE CHARTER VESSELS. WE DO NOT ACCEPT ILLEGAL OR ENDANGERED MARINE LIFE FOR RESALE. WE RESPECT AND ADHERE TO REQUIREMENTS OF THE ORGANIZATION, Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES).”
