Thanks to proceeds from the club’s Gate & Garden Tour and the generous contributions of sponsors, the club has awarded scholarships to local high school and college students each year for over a decade.

2018 Winner – Massimo Lucidi

2018 Scholarship winner, Massimo Lucidi, with Past President, Lynn Jax.

Graduated: Laguna Beach High School

Entering: Saddleback Community College, Horticultural Studies

Scholarship: $2,500

Career Plans: Landscape design/architecture; horticulture

Comments: Massimo Lucidi is the perfect choice to receive our annual scholarship as he embodies the essence of one who cherishes what nature has to offer. His concentrated efforts on preservation of the environment and his desire to study landscape design/horticulture will benefit the community.

Essay summary: Gardening has been a passion of Massimo’s since he was 12. He designed and renovated the landscape around his house. He spent most of his high school community service hours (48) at the Nix Nature Center in Laguna Canyon, removing invasive plants and dehydrating weeds. Restoring natural landscape deep in the Nature Preserve was a “beyond-satisfying” experience for him. After expressing his desire to pursue landscape design, Massimo took the advice of Nix Ranger Laura Cohen and met with Dr. Ken Lee at Saddleback College, the Co-Chair of the Horticulture Department where he will study. Massimo believes that pursuing landscape design or horticulture will lead him to discover valuable opportunities and resources that will propel his environmental career.
